Why I Love Hunting Geese In Colorado

By Robert

Colorado has many great game animals to offer and since a kid I have been able to hunt them all. Though I love hunting them all there is only one hunt that I go all out on. Goose hunting.

If you weren't from Colorado you'd never guess Colorado is one of the hottest places to hunt Canadian Geese. With an abundance of habitat that waterfowl love Colorado makes a great home for ducks and geese alike.

My love for goose hunting was solidified the day my Dad took me goose hunting for the first time. There used to be a bar in Severance, CO called Bruce's Bar and it was owned by an older guy who lived for goose hunting. He had several blinds surrounding a large lake where a lot of the geese would roost. After this day I would be called a goose hunter for life!

I can recall everything about that day. We arrived at Bruce's Bar at 6:30 in the morning, we paid for our blind and then sat down at the bar for a warm breakfast. After breakfast we drove over to the blind. We ended up choosing some blind in an old rock irrigation ditch. As the sun was rising you could hear the sounds of thousands of geese sitting on lake just west of our blind. At 8am the sounds of the geese became louder and louder and you could see this huge mass of geese getting off the lake. After a few circles the geese broke up and flew into different directions. I do remember my Dad shooting several times but I don't remember if we downed any birds. Regardless of kill count I knew then I was sold on goose hunting.

Since then I have graduated from sitting in blinds pass shooting to sitting in goose pits decoying birds with a short reed goose call. I share this great sport with some of my closest buddies and they all love goose hunting just as much as I do. Just recently we created Colorado Hunting Journal, a website where we share our hunting and outdoors experiences with other Colorado hunters.
