How The Last Decade Gave Birth To Indie Music

By Mary Tanenbaum

As with each passing Decade there are always moments that define that Decade. If we were to look at what music defined the last Decade, we need look no further than the rise of indie Rock. Who would have seen this coming even just 10 or 20 years ago? Certainly not most of us out there.

With the alternative Rock of the 90's out of the way. The door was open for the birth of indie Rock at the beginning of the last Decade. Amazingly over Ten years later and indie is still as popular now as when it first started out.

New trends started to appear on the music scene. Music that did not conform to the mainstream started to appear. This was a welcome addition and the music fans loved the concept. Bands such as Wilko, and the Strokes quickly made their mark on the music scene.

There are differing views as to what indie music really is. Some say that it is a band that is either not signed to a label, or signed to an independent label. Others may say that it is just a genre of music that does not conform to the stereotypical mainstream music.

Most people agree that whatever the meaning of indie is, the fact is that it produces some great music. For too long we have had to put up with music that was specifically geared up to getting a top 40 airplay slot.

With more indie bands coming to the fore and trying out new sounds, who is to say that indie will not be here for a long time to come.

Maybe most of the success has come about because of the ease of access to the internet. Many new bands are to be found daily on the internet playing their songs. Whatever the reason for the success of indie Rock, I hope that it continues.

The previous Decade was defined by indie Rock, and I am convinced that this Decade will be too.
