Holiday Destinations: Five Places to Visit in Australia

By Becky Padmore

Australia is an incredible place to visit, it's a diverse country that offers something for everyone is is one of the world's best holiday destinations. If you are a party animal you can head up the East Coast, if you prefer more relaxed scenery then the West Coast and the Northern Territory would suit. Australia also has some excellent cities including Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane all of which have a vibrant youthful edge. The great cities aside, these are five places in Australia you shouldn't miss:-

1. The Centre -Otherwise known as the Red Centre for it's colourful desert like scenery the centre offers three amazing sites to visit - Uluru, The Olgas and Kings Canyon. It's probably a good idea to visit Uluru (Ayers Rock) first to either scale the side with the help of a chain or take the long and often very hot walk around the base. If you do decide to walk it then take plenty of water and a camera to capture the ancient Aboriginal art.

Next on your list could be the The Olgas (or Kata Tjuta). You will have to travel 25km from Uluru but it's worth travelling the distance. With over 36 sandstone domes and a huge width, the site is awe inspiring! If you are fit and healthy take the 8 kilometre walk over the rocks. Last but not least is Kings Canyon which is 300m in length and looks out over Kings Creek. Both are beautiful sites popular with visitors and photographers.

2. Fraser Island - Be sure to include a visit to Fraser Island - the largest sand island in the world. The island is a wonderfully surreal experience filled with sand dune landscapes, clear 'window' lakes and even a mysterious looking ship wreck. You'll also see plenty of dingos! See the whole island by hiring a group four wheel drive tour where you can explore the whole place, camping overnight for at least a few days.

3. Byron Bay - A relaxed place with a distinctive hippy vibe, Byron Bay is one of the most popular spots in Australia. Here you have the choice of relaxing beside the amazing coastline, browsing the interesting shops or learning a new skill such as juggling or fire eating! Resident artists also add to the town's creative feel.

4. Barossa Valley - The Valley is widely known for it's fantastic wine and lush vineyards. Famous wine such as Yalumba are made here and you can see the whole process on a tour. Taking a tour is highly recommended and you'll get to visit many wineries and also great restaurants.

5. Kangaroo Island - Kangaroo Island is Australia's third biggest island. To get to the Island you will need to get a ferry from Adelaide and once there you'll see unusual wildlife and scenery. It's home to many native Australian animals including Albino Wallaby, Sea Lions, fur seals and blue penguins which come on land at sunset for feeding. The large island is surprisingly diverse. If you travel its 155km length you will find soaring cliffs, dense forest, towering sand dunes, wetlands and powder white beaches.
