The NBA All Star game was played without a couple of high profile participants this year as the Los Angeles Lakers' Kobe Bryant and Philadelphia 76ers' Allen Iverson would not play due to injury. Kobe and 'AI' were the latest in a string of injuries to All Star players that also claimed Portland's Brandon Roy and New Orleans' Chris Paul. The NBA has been much more strict about missing the All Star game after many players would come up with illusory 'injuries' right before the game that miraculously healed before play resumed after the break.

Kobe Bryant has been plagued with minor injuries all year, but missed the Lakers' last three games prior to the All Star contest due to an ankle sprain. Los Angeles is hopeful that by not playing in the game that Kobe will be able to return to action immediately after play resumes following the All Star break. Bryant did travel to Dallas to participate in All Star game festivities.

Iverson has missed Philadelphia's past five games due to an illness suffered by one of his young children. Unlike Kobe, Iverson wasn't expected to be in Dallas this weekend due to the nature of his situation. It's debatable that Iverson deserved an All Star game nod in the first place. He quickly wore out his welcome in Memphis to start the year, and eventually landed back in Philadelphia where he's averaged 14.4 points per game since his return. He was voted in to the starting lineup by NBA fans, and this renewed calls from the media to revise the procedure for selecting All Star game participants. Unfortunately, many of the All Star voters are dimwits and pick players based on their 'name recognition' rather than their in-season performance.

Jason Kidd of the Dallas Mavericks was chosen to replace Bryant in the Western Conference lineup, while New York's David Lee was the East's fill in for Iverson. Every time he steps on scene, it's with a short speech, aided by his lackeys. "Am I the prettiest?!" "SHO NUFF!" "Am I the baddest?!" "SHO NUFF!" "Am I the meanest, leanest mofo around dis town?!" "SHO NUFF!" "SHO'NUFF! Da Shogun of Harlem!" He wears visor sunglasses, a samurai's hakama (those baggy pants that disguise foot movement), and shoulder pads, as well as a top knot... If there's one downside to the movie, it's the whole subplot about the Cyndi Lauper wannabe singer and her promoter/boyfriend. There are also some really fun, corny moments along the way. At one point, Leroy tries to seek wisdom from the guy who writes the fortune cookies at the local Chinese restaurant, only to find that they're written by a computer. Therein he finds that zen wisdom of emptiness and being.

Could the movie have been a bit better without the subplot about the record promoter and his girlfriend? Sure, but there's always something about every movie where it "could have been better". Writer director Boaz Yakin has had an interesting career in Hollywood. He's always been, primarily, a write for hire. When two of Fresh's friends are murdered by one of the street dealers he works with, and at the same time, his mother informs him that she's going to have to give a couple of them up for adoption, Fresh puts a brilliant scheme into motion.

Fresh's scheme to take the badguys down is really incredible, serving as a fascinating parallel to the chess games he plays with his father. The master stroke of his plan is that none of his opponents suspect him of a thing, as he is, after all, just a kid. He essentially manages to play dumb and innocent, while in fact outsmarting everyone around him.

The tightrope he walks to work the scheme is suspenseful, dangerous, frightening, knowing that at any moment, they could catch on to him and put him under the ground.

The movie is really unlike any other. We've seen movies where the hero schemes their way out of trouble, rather than fighting or using guns, but rarely do we see a movie where that hero is a ten year old boy, rarely do we see a film with a child hero in a violent situation without being a fantasy family film like Home Alone. Despite a high pressure effort from the American power elite--including President Barack Obama and TV gabfest queen Oprah Winfrey--Chicago was the first city eliminated from contention.

Bookmakers offered odds on the host city choice, with Rio listed as second favorite at +200. Chicago had been the wagering favorite at most books, particularly after President Obama got involved personally in the US bid effort. Chicago was bet as high as a -300 favorite, while Madrid and Tokyo were priced in the +250 range. Some suggest that Tokyo didnt deserve to have such short odds, but was the beneficiary of regional pride from the notoriously enthusiastic betting population of Japan.

Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, President of Brazil, got the better of his US counterpart Barack Obama The Brazilian leader stressed the unfairness that South America had never hosted the games in his speech to the committee;

"It is a time to address this imbalance. It is time to light the Olympic cauldron in a tropical country."

The Edmonton Eskimos survived a wild back and forth CFL shootout against the Calgary Stampeders before prevailing 38-35 to take over sole possession of first place in the CFL West. Edmonton improved to 4-3 with the win, while Calgary dropped to 3-4.

After the game, winning QB Ricky Ray said that he enjoyed playing in the shootout:

"That was a ton of fun. In the CFL you get to play in a lot of games like this, especially against a guy like (Calgary quarterback Henry) Burris, who has done this to us. It's great to come out on the winning end of a shoot-out like that. It's a great uplift for the team. It's a huge win for us."

With a bye week on deck, Eskimos head coach Richie Hall said that the outcome couldnt have been timed any better:

"Regardless of what happens, we are coming back in first place. Now we have one up on Calgary. It's going to be a dogfight for all the teams in the West and any chance you get to win, especially a win like this, it's a real bonus. It's great for our confidence."

Calgarys Burris remembered a very similar game last year:

A Short Synopsis Of Vertigo Starring James Stewart

Hitchcock's iconic movie Vertigo is a classic thriller and features lead characters James Stewart and Kim Novak. Vertigo is the kind of movie that you once you have seen you will always remember.

It was produced in 1958 and written by Samuel Taylor and Alec Coppel who adapted it from a novel by Narcejac.

Much of the setting for the movie takes place in northern California from San Francisco to San Juan Bautista and there are many iconic landmarks used in the shoot such as the Golden Gate Bridge, Muir Woods and Coit Tower.

The plot of the film is compelling viewing and is ranked as one of the best films of all time. There are many twists and turns which will have you on the edge of your seat.

The central protagonist of the movie, Scottie, is a detective who witnesses a traumatic death of his colleague. The image haunts him and this is when his vertigo begins which has symptoms of aversion to heights. He takes early retirement and ends his days as a detective until an old college chum, Gavin, pleads for his help in a private case.

This is the catalyst for the driving force of the movie. Gavin asks Scottie to investigate his wife Madeleine whom he fears is losing her mind. She is obsessed with a dead woman named Carlotta Valdes and reenacts the same journey each day as a kind of pilgrimage to Carlotta.

Scottie spends the day trailing Madeleine, Gavin's wife, and he witnesses her jump into the bay at Fort Point with the Golden Gate looming above her. After he rescues her there is a chemistry between them and Madeleine tells Scottie about her fears of death and a recurring dream with a bell tower in it.

The setting for this dream is San Juan Bautista and they decide that if she goes there then she may face this nightmare head on and fight it. However, when they get there, Madeleine races up the stairs as if she has seen a ghost. Scottie can not follow because of the vertigo. He can only watch as she plunges to her death from the top.

Madeleine's death haunts him and he revisits the places they went and can't forget her. He meets Judy, a striking young woman who bears an uncanny resemblance to Madeleine. He asks Judy to wear the same clothes and go to the same places that he went with Madeleine. She does this out of love for him.

A twist arises when Carlotta Valdes' necklace is spotted on Judy. Scottie figures out that they are the same and he decides to confront her with the truth.

He revisits San Juan Bautista with Judy determined to get the truth. He finds out that they are the same woman. The whole thing was a plot to murder Gavin's first wife, the woman that actually fell from the bell tower.

In a tragic twist, Judy is startled by a nun at the top of the tower and really plunges to her death. Scottie is now cured of his vertigo.

This movie is suspenseful and all lovers of thrillers and mysteries will enjoy the nail biting plot that will keep you guessing until the end. - 39815

For the last ten years, there's been a defining trend in fictional television: Realism. It started with reality television and influenced fictional television before long like Sopranos, and Weeds is definitely one of the funniest in this trend, and certainly belongs on your downloads queue the next time you pay a visit to your tv and movie download service.

It began with reality television. See, for a time, fictional television had just plain gotten too darn formulaic. It always felt like you were just watching mindless television. It always came down to the same characters: The wacky neighbors, the football loving dads and their football widows, stories about the kid borrowing the car without asking and so on, and... It was just really predictable.

Along came reality television. Say what you will about it, but it did make some changes. TV producers found that viewers really responded better to more realistic scenarios, more real people. See, in Goodfellas, the characters worry about the business, but on The Sopranos, the characters worry about business as well as family, personal finances, their relations with their friends, sex, health, psychological well being and so on. You know, everything we have to worry about in real life.

Weeds follows the same trend and utilizes a great concept: Suburban single mom runs a massive marijuana selling empire. You get an equal mix of great stoner humor, crime storytelling and family drama, and it's always funny.

The show is really defined by some great characters. The Candyman is one of the best. She's actually a female character, codenamed the Candyman. She runs a bakery that specializes in marijuana goodies. She's also a fitness nut, refusing to sell to anyone who doesn't promise to exercise and burn off the extra calories provided by her brownies and cupcakes.

The show follows two primary plot threads: One following the mother's journey in building her criminal empire, and one following her family issues and the local gossip. Watching how the two stories affect one another is always worth a laugh.

The show is quite addictive, of course. It's structured as such that each episode is only a chapter and each season is really a self contained story, so download a full season at a time and be ready to spend several hours a night catching up on what happens next.
