The next scene features the two men, very awkwardly kidnapping Jerry's wife, Jean.

While the original ransom was set for 80,000 between the captors and Jerry, Jerry later decides to tell his father in law that they are demanding a million. He agrees adamantly to pay it, but demands that he is there to give it to the kidnappers himself. Wade, the father in law, actually aims to kill the kidnappers and get his daughter without giving them the money at all.

It isn't a surprise that the whole thing gets botched, leaving Wade dead and one of the two kidnappers sent to collect the money very much wounded. He is able, though, to get the money and flee. He discovers there is a million, and he hides all but the 80,000 that his partner was aware of. Back at the cabin, the wounded crook finds the wife dead at the hands of the other crook. They get into an argument, and the already wounded kidnapper also dies.

The other is soon arrested, and the following scene depicts Jerry being arrested as well for his involvement in planning and seeing through with the entire plan. There were so many incredible performances in this motion picture, though among the best would be William H. Macy as Jerry and Steve Buschemi as one of the two kidnappers.

Before he was Forrest Gump, before Saving Private Ryan, Tom Hanks was primarily a comedy star. If you watched Bosom Buddies, you knew that Hanks showed a lot of promise. He may not be considered one of the best actors out there, but he's always cited as one of the most charming and instantly likable. His early comedies, Turner and Hooch and Big, showcased his talent for making you laugh and his likability, but Joe Vs. The Volcano is one of the all time must movie download.

So, what makes this one so much better than his other early nineties comedies? Well to start off with, those other comedies provided big laughs and a charming leading man, but Joe vs the Volcano provides something more. Not only is this movie funny, weird and unpredictable, it also contains the meaning of life. No joke.

The film starts off with Joe slaving away at a miserable, miserable job. He works in a dismal factory, a disgusting, repugnant block of concrete in the middle of a field of mud, where flickering fluorescent lights, he believes, are giving him cancer. Bo Welch, the set designer for Beetlejuice, created this ugly masterpiece of depression as well as the look of the rest of the film.

Joe, a serious hypochondriac, takes a trip to the doctor's office where he learns that he has a "Brain Cloud". A fatal condition. From here he meets the industrialist played by Lloyd Bridges, who offers him a chance to live like a king for several months, in exchange for his suicide by jumping into a volcano.

The industrialist uses an island, the Waponi Woo, for mining, and in order to keep the people happy, he must sacrifice someone to their volcano God, lest he get mad and blow the whole island up. The chief of these people would rather someone from his own tribe do the deed, but they all seem a bit too cowardly. Joe is more than happy to give his life and die like a man, since it's that or waste away on a hospital sickbed.

From here, Joe is given his life back. He quits his job, he does what he wants with his time, he enjoys himself, and for the first time in his life, he appreciates what a gift it is to have been born. This is the core philosophy of the movie and the meaning of life: Enjoy it.

This belief is reflected in the look and feel of the film. It's not just another comedy, it takes place in a world all its own. As Roger Ebert said of the film: So many films you've seen before, but you've never seen this movie before.

Interestingly, the original draft of the script (SPOILER ALERT) had the industrialist and the doctor getting their just deserts at the end of the film. It's probably better that that ending was nixed, as these two characters can almost be seen in a heroic light. I don't know if you know this but I have been living in Guatemala for the last year and have been loving it. Since then imy husband and I have done as much as we can to get to know it which means a lot of fun trips. But this time we didn't want to go too far so I called some of my Guatemalan friends and for some advice.

They suggested something I had never thought of before yet it was so obvious: A nice picnic in the afternoon in one of Antigua Guatemala's ruins. It sounded like a great idea so I ended up inviting them to come with us too. Then there was the question, which ruins should we visit? That's because there are around 6 or 7 and the photos i've seen are all beautiful. We ended up picking one called San Jeronimo located on one of Antigua's corners.

This is how the day went: After a regular Sunday morning we had lunch and I packed up my picnic set and off we went. We got there like 10 minutes after because everything in Antigua is less than15 minutes away in car. We settled up in one of its beautiful gardens and explored the place. This is not a very big monument but it is beautiful. There are lots of gardens and in some places you can still see murals from when it was a school.

My husband, my friends and I had a great time just chilling under a tree's shadow, enjoying the view of the gardens, eating some snacks and listening to birds that were passing by. On the other hand my son had a blast exploring and climbing everything he saw. Plus he had a little adventure partner with him that was just as excited to be there. I'm glad to say that even staying close to home this turned out to be a relaxing yet exciting family adventure not so far from home.

These ruins belong to what used to be a catholic school in the early 1700's and in the late 1700's it was turned into the Real Aduana. Years later it was destroyed by earthquakes and was never restored because the city movet to where the actual Guatemala City is located. It was until 1990's when the council for the protection of this colonial city started doing maintenance work to it.
