Water pump: a pump pumping water at force through the surface can maintain a breathing hole in your pond, but only under fairly mild icy conditions. The pump must be placed in deep water or it might freeze solid.

Hoola-Hoop: if the weather is only mildly icy, a hoola-hoop with a round football floating in its centre can be effective at stopping ice forming within the hoop. The wind keeps the ball moving within the hoop and ice does not get a chance to develop.

This hole in the ice is critical. Your fish will be semi-dormant in the winter and you may not see them for months, but they still have to breathe and excrete and the gases that that and the plants give off have to be permitted to escape or they will poison the water and kill your fish.

At this time of the year it is extremely important not to over-feed. Fish build up layers of fat in the summer and live off that fat during their semi-hibernation in the winter, but they do eat occasionally. The only problem for you is that you will not know which days they decide to come up for a bite.

The Polson museum has always presented to its visitors the values that everyone in Hoquiam cherished and adored and that is a deep sense of pride in its past and heritage. Since 1976, when the widowed Mrs. Polson donated her mansion to the city, the old home of the Polson family has been the caretaker of the town's rich history and traditions.

The owner or the beautiful mansion was the late Arnold Polson, who got all of the six thousand five hundred square foot property as a very generous wedding gift from his bachelor uncle Robert Polson. The opulent home was erected in 1924 and was only eclipsed in magnificence by Arnold's childhood home that once in the past stood right beside his own house.

When the Polson mansion was donated to the city it took all of thirty three years of hard work and fundraising to complete the refurbishment and reconstruction needed to bring back the wonderful house to its original opulence. To give visitors a sense of how magnificent it was when it was a private home, pictures of circa 1941 scenes depicting each of the mansions rooms with all its stately decor and furnishings are displayed in each of the very same rooms are displayed.

Nowhere else can you find such a broad compilation of Grays Harbor heritage. Others were more prepared than some while a few were well financed and led by men who knew how to make a profit. Some of these men, like the owners of the Lumber and Shingle Company Robert and Joseph Lytle quickly and meticulously made their wealth. In just a few years their foresight and strong personalities and deep pockets made them into so called lumber barons, their cedar shingle manufacturing business was the largest in the world and their introduction and ownership of an electric sawmill, the first of its kind in the entire area gave them a definite advantage. Other players went into the fray with the Grays Harbor Lumber Company securing their interest and fueled by unwavering hunger for lumber and wood products for the powerful Northern Pacific Railroad.

As rich and powerful were the Lytle brothers and the other companies who were subsidiaries of even bigger companies in other industries, none can match the tenacity and unrelenting growth of Alex Polson and his brothers. In just a few years, the Polson's controlled if not owned much of the prime real estate and timber interest in and around Grays Harbor area, with opulent mansions and thousands of employees to prove that they were the biggest.

In 1891, the Lytle brothers Joseph and Robert joined their interest with the Polson Brothers Logging Company, which 12 years later after joining again with another big player the Merill and Ring Corporation was established as the Polson Logging Company, a true industrial giant of that era.

The lumber barons had it all, but the richness of the lands of Grays Harbor was so vast that there was room for everybody to try and make a profit. More than 300 other small logging and milling operations dotted the Grays harbor landscape and even hundreds more of different trade and service type concerns were establish to support the thousands of men who needed anything and everything under the sun.

Logging is the town's history and heritage and will continue to be in the near future. It is what gives the residents their affable character and their love for tenacity and perseverance it is a place that will always be hungry for wood. - 39815

Paul Expected Back For NBA Playoffs Following Knee Surgery

The New Orleans Hornets got some good news regarding injured point guard Chris Paul on Wednesday. Paul will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his left knee on Thursday, and the diagnosis is favorable for a return before the playoffs. Paul suffered a partially torn meniscus in a game against Golden State last week. Preliminary diagnoses suggested that he'd be out of action one to two months, with some concern that he would not return to action this year.

Paul will have surgery in Pensacola, Florida with Dr. James Andrews of Birmingham, Alabama performing the procedure. Andrews is considered among the best in the world at treating sports related injuries, and is considered especially effective at treating knee and ligament injuries. Andrews has worked on a 'who's who' of professional athletes from pro wrestler Ric Flair to New England Patriots' QB Tom Brady.

Hornets' coach and GM Jeff Bower sounded relatively upbeat in discussing Paul's procedure on Wednesday:

"We are anticipating a very successful process. We look forward to his return to action at some point later on. The time frame will be determined after the surgery. I won't speculate on that.Obviously you never want to be in this position to replace a guard like Chris Paul in the middle of the season. We're encouraged with the play of our current group and will continue to monitor that. We feel confident in their capabilities."

Paul originally hurt his knee in a game against Golden State last Wednesday and then re-injured it on Friday night against the Chicago Bulls. He sat out Saturday's game against Memphis. Paul averages a team-high 20.4 points and an NBA-best 11.2 assists.
