By Becky Padmore

If another Christmas at home is all too much to bear, and you long for an alternative to the usual cold turkey and roast potatoes, here are a few seasonal alternatives:

1. Aspen - Aspen, the mountain resort playground of the rich and famous makes a fantastic seasonal break. Spend your holiday celebrity spotting on the slopes, sipping cocktails in a cool nightclub and relaxing in a luxurious hotel or romantic ski lodge. Not really a place to bring the kids but if you're young and attractive this might be your ideal Christmas holiday location.

2. Edinburgh: The bracing but beautiful Scottish city of Edinburgh in the United Kingdom holds festive Christmas events from late November to early January. Come for the fun fair, Scotland's biggest ferris wheel, Christmas markets, show and pantomimes. Indulge in lamb, rabbit or pheasant for your Christmas dinner at one of Edinburgh's many grand hotels, and be sure to stay on a week for Hogmanay - often voted the best New Year's Eve party in the world.

3. Sydney, Australia - If you are allergic to the cold, spending Christmas with bronzed hunks and bikini babes might appeal. December is the first month of summer in Australia and the cosmopolitan city of Sydney regularly attracts 40,000 international visitors each year. For a true Aussie Christmas head down to Bondi or Manly beach and dine on barbecued shrimps, seafood and fresh salads washed down with plenty of chilled beer.

4. New York - New Yorkers love to celebrate Christmas and as expected the famous city pulls out all the stops this time of year. The Christmas trees, the lights, the shows on Broadway and the world-famous shopping are just a few reasons why so many people visit New York during the seasonal holidays. Ride a horse-drawn carriage through Central Park, ice-skate at the Rockefeller center, spend a fortune in Macys and then stop for an eggnog latte in Bloomingdales - a perfect Christmas break.
