The city of San Antonio is unique for many things. While it offers interesting history and an impressive tradition, it also offers modernity. A tourist can come at San Antonio, see a famous historic landmark (such as the Alamo), and later visit some hip night club.
The Alamo is visited by many tourists every year. No wonder! It's a famous historical landmark. Actually, the history of the Alamo predates the famous battle for which it's remembered for. Created in 1724, its first name was the Mission San Antonio de Valero. Its people continued working and farming there, even after the Spanish officials made the five missions secular (in 1793, in the San Antonio region).
After the 1835 conflict with the Mexican army in the city, the battle began. Ben Milam and the volunteers confronted the Mexicans for five days. They one, and one year after, General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna's army arrived with a bigger army. They fought the volunteers for thirteen days. The number of volunteers increased when William B. Travis came. The Alamo was the biggest factor in the defense of Texas.
New Mexican troops arrived. That's when the end of the battle came. The Mexican army was larger and more superior. That's why the volunteers couldn't keep them off for long. The Mexican army broke into the post. Then they launched a cannon on the Long Barrack and the church. On the morning of March 7, 1836, the battle ended. General Santa Anna declared victory over the Alamo.
The Alamo represents the fight for independence and the fight for freedom. Texas is remember for this a lot. Texans know that the fight to freedom isn't easy. It takes big sacrifices. Texans are aware of this. - 39815

About the Author:
Because I really like the Alamo over here, I tend to stay at a San Antonio hotel near it. I occasionally visit the other San Antonio hotels near downtown and the riverwalk as well.
