NFL Preseason Handicapping Basics

By Ross Everett

Betting preseason NFL games never fails to elicit an irreconcilable difference of opinion among sports betting enthusiasts. Some consider it a very poor wagering opportunity, while others maintain that there's no better moneymaking opportunity in sports than pro football's preseason. The truth is probably somewhere between the two extremes--NFL preseason betting must be approached with caution and discipline, but offers the potential to make a tidy profit before the regular season kicks off.

The most compelling argument against preseason wagering is simply that the games don't count. While there are often spots during the regular season where teams may seem more or less motivated, in theory they all want to win. That's not something that can be taken as a 'given' during the preseason, however, as the individual agendas of NFL coaching staffs can very widely. Some might want to win games to establish a winning attitude, others might put a greater focus on working in a new offensive or defensive scheme. Others may prioritize evaluating talent at key positions, while others may simply want to make it through to the regular season without any significant injuries. With all of the uncertainty swirling around preseason football, handicapping wins and losses against the pointspread can be exceedingly difficult.

The proponent of preseason wagering would argue that this is the very reason that good opportunities frequently arise during preseason. First, additional value is frequently found with the underdog in preseason games by their very nature. To explain, in a hypothetical matchup between a Superbowl champion and an also-ran the "better" team by regular season standards would invariably be favored. However, by virtue of their success the "better" teams have not only more 'marquee names' to protect, but also valued guys in the trenches who could cause big problems if injured. Frequently, they'll have more depth and thus fewer personnel evaluation decisions to deal with. They'll have no need to "create a winning attitude", nor will they usually have wholesale changes in team composition, offensive or defensive strategy, or coaching philosophies to deal with. In short, the "better" teams often go into preseason situations with little to accomplish other than to get the games over with and stay healthy.

On the other hand, consider the 'lesser' team in a preseason matchup. They often have a number of key starting positions they need to fill, along with backup positions up for grabs. They may have new coaching staffs that players want to impress, new offensive or defensive schemes to implement. Most significantly, 'lesser' teams often view the preseason as an opportunity to build team chemistry or create a winning attitude. A team trying to rebuild can benefit from winning *any* games, regardless of whether or not they count in the standings. For a league doormat, a win over an elite level opponent can serve as a rare highlight of a losing season.

Even among teams that don't worry much about wins and losses during the preseason, they don't want to go into the season losing them all. For that reason, one of the most successful preseason situations over the past decade and a half have been teams that lost their first two preseason affairs. During that span, 0-2 teams have hit right around 60% against the spread.

The philosophy of a NFL head coach is arguably the single most important factor contributing to preseason success. Some coaches always want to win, even if the games don't count in the standings. Other coaches place a much greater importance on evaluating personnel and giving backups playing time they won't have the opportunity to get during the regular season. The coaches that have a strong desire to win in the preseason often result in their team's pointspreads being inflated somewhat, but a motivated team is always worth consideration for a wager.

The Internet has become a very valuable weapon in the NFL preseason handicapper's arsenal. Simply following the local media reports of NFL teams can often produce a wealth of 'mission critical' betting information. The combination of anxious beat writers, little in the way of 'real' news, and a less guarded approach by coaches to games that 'don't count' can often reveal game strategies, playing time for key personnel, or even a team's specific agenda for a particular game. Sometime coaches will come right out and say that evaluating a certain position, or working on a specific offensive scheme is their top priority for a game. It's a great way to find not only good teams to bet on, but strong situations to go against teams that are focused on something other than outscoring their opponent.

In closing, the best advice is to not be afraid of wagering on preseason football, but to not get too excited about it either. It's a good chance to grind out a small profit, but definitely not the moneymaking opportunity of a lifetime. There will be plenty of other"and better"football wagering opportunities down the road. Discipline and self-control is always in your best interest when betting on sports, and that certainly is the case in the preseason NFL. - 39815

Under Stars And The Sun In The Yucatan

By Ron Williams

This is part two in a sequence of four articles.

In our most recent article we covered the jungle yucatan peninsula vicinity south of Playa del Carmen as well as around Tulum. In this column we will focus on Playa and the recreational activities surrounding this flourishing beachfront Caribbean township. What began as a sleepy-eyed and tiny Mexican fishing community, has rapidly become one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Caribbean. Back in the early 90's we visited that sleepy little village and I can say first hand it is a far cry from what it is today. Popularity sparks progress and change, but if you are looking for a good vacation and gobs of fun, Playa is the place.

Playa nowadays represents a Caribbean destination that has it all. From world class shopping on the famed 5th Avenue to a number of adventure parks, first class Playa del Carmen hotels and all-out resorts to hip-hop clubs and dining alternatives to satiate even the most sensitive appetites. Whether by daylight or night, you should find no shortage of things to do in Playa del Carmen!

Playa is a lot more than just kilometers away from the small Tulum hotels and eco-chic cabana resorts you will discover further down the seashore, although it still continues to be a charming, dynamic and culturally rich place to visit. By day, Playa del Carmen gives you some of the greatest people observation to be found in Mexico, regardless of whether on the broad yucatan beaches or on the 5th Avenue walking mall you should see a extensive range of visitors from all over the world. There is a lot to do and experience in this centrally situated little city, being a quick ferryboat ride to Cozumel for a terrific day trip for snorkeling or scuba or going up the coastline 30 minutes to the city of cancun for even more options.

Playa del Carmen during the day means beach runs, snorkel and SCUBA tours, day trip jungle safaris, adventure theme parks, golf and great shopping. The night time brings out the untamed side in nearly all who start out out beneath the light of the moon. In addition to the world class dining options there are at a minimum a dozen dance-clubs that cater to the late night dancing and adventurous crowds. Commonly accepted as a fun family vacation choice, it is rapidly establishing itself as a competitor for Cancun with the dance party entertainment options. A handfull of places you may get the urge to visit for the nightlife include; CoCo Bongo for entertaining stage shows with gifted music cover bands, The Blue Parrot for the fire shows on Friday and Saturday nights, OM Playa for a drink in comfort and La Santanera for a hip dance club.

Whether by daylight or nightlife, with family, a duo or single traveler, Playa del Carmen really offers something for everybody that is looking for a little or a lot of the caribbean in their vacation. In our next article we will go inland and discover the wonders of the mexican world and culture of Merida and the adjacent areas. There is zero shortage of fun and positive energy when it comes to vacations on the Yucatan! - 39815

Frank Capra's Classic Film Its A Wonderful Life

By Shawn Torres

Capra's Its a Wonderful Life is without a doubt one of the all time feel-good movies. It's not feel good in the way that, say, a cheap Lifetime movie is feel good, it's not some phoney baloney optimism like Pay it Forward, it is real, true, and honest. It is also, without a doubt, the greatest Christmas film ever made.

The nostalgic inner child in you may disagree and cite A Christmas Story or How the Grinch Stole Christmas or even It's Christmas Charlie Brown! The cynic in you will jokingly cite Die Hard or Lethal Weapon as the greatest holiday film ever made, but those sides of you are both wrong! When it comes to a holiday film, you need to go with your heart and soul, and that points you towards It's a Wonderful Life.

The film deals with the darker side of the holidays, the depression, the self pity, the nihilism, despair and disappointment that so few filmmakers have the courage to address. In fact, the second act begins with Jimmy Stewart, the warmest and most friendly actor in history, attempting suicide! To start from such an incredibly low point takes confidence.

It is because of this ugliness, this darkness and pessimism, that it is so heroic to see Stewart's George Bailey overcome the odds and learn to love his life again. True optimism only counts in the face of adversity. Anyone can be positive in one of those weepy made for cable Lifetime movies where nobody ever really faces any true challenges, but Bailey faces the worst challenges of his life, and learns to face them with a sense of hope.

This film and Rocky rank as the all time great "Tears of Joy" films. If you're not crying by the end, then sorry, but there's probably something wrong with you, no offense. The film is simply so human, so humane, yet so honest, that it can't help but dash any trace of negativity and pessimism you might have been feeling when it began.

The movie actually flopped on release for some reason or other. Capra was always a director you could rely on to make a lot of money for the studios, but for whatever reason, this one just didn't grab the initial audience. Luckily, it did go on to become one of the most popular movies of all time on cable, in second runs, and on video and DVD. Still, at the time, it almost sank the director's career.

One more interesting point: They say that Stewart was Capra's only choice for the role of George Bailey, but that's not true! In fact, his "only choice" was Henry Fonda, but Stewart was a second choice, when push came to shove. We can say Fonda would have been great in the role, but it's hard to imagine anyone but Stewart playing the character to such perfection.

There were actually several alternative endings written, and one or two filmed. If you've ever seen the Saturday Night Live episode where Bailey leads the whole town to Potter's home to give him his comeuppance... That was actually based on an ending that was filmed by Capra! The one filmed for the movie probably wasn't quite as goofy, but nevertheless, it WAS filmed! - 39815

A Definitive Review Of The Departed

By Vicki Mcguire

The year two thousand and six produced some awesome action based flicks and the departed is just one of them. Based on the back ground of mafia and police tussle, this movie inculcates the audience with introducing not one but two double crossers of which one is a good cop and one is a cop, gone rogue.

Briefly the story is a summation of action packed drama and thrilling sequences that is usually a part of every police and mafia box office release. The difference is created by the induction of two double agents within the movie plot of which one works for the cops and the other is cop but works for the rivals and criminals. The story line of this movie renders a lot of sequences in which you can see some genuine human reactions to the art of deception and betrayal.

Young Billy is a fresh Police graduate and his connection with the Irish underworld in the US makes him one of the best candidates to spy on the mafia. He quickly gains trust of the mafia heads and lands in the middle of all the criminal action planning and doings and hence proves to be a vital factor is sabotaging most of them.

Collin Sullivan, the mafia man in the police, on the other hands is as sharp and cunning as Billy and quickly moves to higher positions within the Police special investigation units. His double role is appreciated because this is one factor that makes this film different from other mafia movies. His affiliation with the wrong side of the law makes him the only leading character in the movie that attracts the critics as well as the general film audience.

Later on in the movie, it becomes clear to both the bad guys and the good guys that they have some leaking point in their respective gangs and groups. The two double crossing agents find themselves in desperate struggle to uncover the other moles identity in order to prove themselves as innocent. Now this is the point that the film gets really interesting and gains the action and thrilling momentum in which both these double agents are on the verge of jeopardizing with their mates and fellows in their respective gangs.

The last half of the movie is something worth looking forward too. Although it might not be on the most action filled thrillers but the intensity and depth of the drama is absolutely worth watching. In these scenes Billy and Collin move toward a head to head collision based on the Collins discovery that Billy is actually working for the cops and is about to turn the whole gang in.

Billy is seen going after Collin in order to convince him to leave the gang and use his immunity in order to get a normal life back. This argument and trail ends up with Billy getting shot at by Collin which results in his death.

The departed also focuses on the strength of good versus bad. The whole film has the capacity to involve the audience within the story line. The movie is good drama with some great action parts. - 39815
