The basics of setting NFL totals are fairly simple: the bookmaker looks at the offensive and defensive data for the two teams and constructs a number based on points allowed and points scored. If one team had scored 275 points and allowed 350 in their previous sixteen games that's a total of 625. Divided by 16 and that's an average of just over 39 points per game. If their opponent had scored 285 and allowed 400 (685) over 16 games that translates to just under 43 points per game. Add the two numbers together, divide by two and youve got a base total of 40.5.

At this point other factors are considered such as the significance of key numbers like 3 and 7 on final scores, weather conditions, injuries, playing surface, etc. Another component that is important is the qualitative matchup between the offense and defense of each team"meaning that a team like the Baltimore Ravens with a strong defense will be more likely to impose their will on a team resulting in a lower final score.

Of course as in the case of the NFL pointspread, public perception is a crucial component of the linesmaking process. For example, the conventional wisdom is that bad weather like rain, snow, or sleet results in lower scores and for that reason a bookmaker will shade the total accordingly. However, its not quite that simple--some handicappers would maintain that sloppy weather can produce higher scores in certain situations as defensive backs aren't able to cut as well and react to the man their covering. Furthermore, turnovers are in theory more likely in inclement weather.

In conclusion, NFL totals are a very good opportunity for a hard working handicapper to leverage his information about a situational matchup to find good wagering value. Like most elements of the sports handicapping discipline, its not easy to stay a step ahead of the bookmakers who have access to the same weather and injury--and have factored it into the number--but is a very entertaining and potentially rewarding challenge for the NFL bettor. - 39815

If you remember the eighties, then you certainly remember The Goonies. This movie was a classic. On the other hand, if you still haven't seen it for some crazy reason... Think Pirates of the Caribbean meets Stand By Me meets Indiana Jones meets The Sopranos meets... Well, it's a whole lot of different movies all wrapped into one, really. It's primarily an adventure flick, but it makes a lot of stops along the way, and stands as one of the all time classic kids movie downloads.

The movie follows, who else, The Goonies. This gang of misfits, led by Mikey Walsh, is known around the city of Astoria, Oregon for always getting into some sort of trouble. The story really kicks off when the rich folks in town decide to buy up the neighborhood to convert it into a golf course. The city of Astoria is really gorgeous, and it's too bad that it only features prominently in the first act of the film before it gets into the cave-dwelling adventure stuff.

So, the Goonies have to go get some buried treasure to save their neighborhood. They find a treasure map in dad's attic, they go to a restaurant on the edge of town where it turns out there are some Italian gangsters known as the Fratellis hiding out, and keeping their little brother, Sloth, a gigantic, deformed monster with a heart of gold chained up to a chair watching black and white TV all day. So the kids have to somehow get into the caves under the restaurant and find the treasure without getting the Fratellis' attention and...

It sounds like a lot of information to take in all at once: Pirates, the mafia, buried treasure, foreclosures... But if you just stay along for the ride, you don't have to worry about keeping track of all that. Just enjoy it for what it is, a fast paced, action filled adventure romp through caves and crypts, culminating in a showdown on an underground pirate ship.

Really, the movie's all about fun. It's a really silly, fun, exciting movie, partly because it doesn't go all the way into fantasy territory. Unlike Monster Squad, everything that happens in The Goonies technically COULD happen in real life... It's not very likely, but within the context of the film, it feels about as real as anything in Stand by Me. This really helps it inspire you with a sense of adventure in your every day life.

When the film came out, it was considered to be a little TOO fast paced, with booby traps and swordfights breaking out at the drop of a hat. However, when compared to the manic pace of most modern children's films, The Goonies is downright laid back.

Regardless, the film is a classic of the eighties era of adventure movies. Back when Indiana Jones was big, you had a bunch of people who wanted to join in and put their own spin on it. The Goonies was actually devised by Spielberg himself, so it was sort of his own take on his own ideas: Put kids in place of Indiana Jones.

James Cameron's recent opus, Avatar, is considered to be the new revolution in film and cinematic technology. However, in the eyes of many fans, James Cameron may never top his action masterpiece Terminator 2. While he was placed on the map well before this with films like Aliens, it wasn't until Terminator 2 that he was really given the freedom to create something that broke all barriers of what had come before him. Terminator 2 is always remembered as one of the most technologically innovative films ever made, but with Cameron, the special effects are only there to tell the story, not the other way around. This one stays focused on the action and on the characters, not on the twisty turny plot line. James Cameron always focuses on what's important, not effects, not plot, but on character, and sometimes on hardcore action scenes.

The 1962 film, Lawrence of Arabia, depicted the time that Thomas E Lawrence, a World War I British Army officer, spent with the Arabs. The film won 7 Academy Awards, including Best Score, Director, Cinematography, and Picture. Many consider it to be among the greatest movies ever made. Its main focus is on the role Lawrence played in the war between the Arabs and the Turks.

Borrowing a page from Citizen Kane, the movie opens with Lawrence's death in 1935. He was killed while riding a motorcycle near his home when he swerved to miss two boys on bicycles. Reporters at his funeral services try in vain to glean some understanding of the man from those who knew him best. The action then shifts to World War I Cairo. Lieutenant Lawrence is dispatched to ascertain what chance Prince Faisal appears to have in his rebellion against the Turks. In a meeting with Faisal, Lawrence recommends a daring attack on Aqaba. From that point on, Lawrence finds himself firmly entrenched in the Arab Rebellion, even when it puts him at odds with his native land. During the course of the war, he discovers aspects of his personality that disturb him, such as a certain enjoyment of killing.

Ironically, most actors who starred in the film were not the first ones chosen. Lawrence is portrayed by Peter O'Toole, but the part was passed on by Albert Finney and Marlon Brando first. When Laurence Olivier dropped out, the part of Prince Faisal then went to Alec Guinness. The producer wanted Cary Grant for the part of General Allenby, but the director persuaded him to sign Jack Hawkins for the role. Sherif Ali was portrayed by Omar Sharif after the part was refused by Horst Buchholz and then Alain Delon. Some scenes had already been shot with Edmond O'Brien as Jackson Bentley when he became ill and had to leave. Arthur Kennedy was then offered the role of the American reporter. However, Anthony Quinn, Claude Rains, and Jose Ferrer were not among the second choices.

Several additional characters were also based on real people. General Murray, Prince Faisal, Auda abu Tayi, and General Allenby all played a part in Lawrence's life. His servants, Farraj and Daud, and Talal, who committed a suicidal charge at Tafas, were real. So was Gasim, who was first rescued and then executed by Lawrence.

Many characters were drawn from several different people. Sherif Ali was fictional but believed to be largely based on a cousin of Prince Faisal. Colonel Stewart Newcombe seems to be the inspiration for Colonel Brighton. Lowell Thomas obviously served as the model for Jackson Bentley, the American newsman.

Like most films that are based on historical facts, the film takes some liberties with the truth. For example, the Arab Council was far more powerful than the movie indicated. The desertion of the Arab army was a work of fiction. Other facts, such as the reporter's statement in late 1917 that America was not yet in the war, warped the timeline a bit.

Lawrence's brother and reporter Lowell Thomas have both been critical of the way the movie portrayed Lawrence. Debate has ensued among some as to whether Lawrence was homosexual, egotistical, or masochistic. Such arguments, however, had not led to a decline in the film's popularity.

There have been several versions of Lawrence of Arabia since 1962. The original theatrical release was 222 minutes without the intermission, exit music, and overture. Next, twenty minutes were cut. That is precisely what happens to the main character, Derek Vinyard. Through the scenes that get the film moving, you are introduced to Danny Vinyard who is Derek's younger brother and still in high school. He is asked to write a paper on his brother by his history teacher after a paper that he has written and submitted has landed him in some hot water with the officials of the school.

Derek is a leader of a gang of white supremacists in the neighborhood where they live. They believe that black people are the problem with the world, and that the world might be a much better place if there were no black people. You are briefly given a reasoning for this belief, as you see Derek watch his father killed by a black drug dealer when Derek was very little. A white supremacist took Derek under his wing and brought him up with his Neo-Nazi ideals.

You learn that Derek is in jail, and see a visual depiction of what landed him there. Some black people were attempting to break into his car, when he was alerted of it and he raced outside, gun drawn. He began firing at them all, killing one and wounding another. One managed to escape. The fate of the wounded would mark one of the most graphic scenes ever depicted on film, which was Derek forcing the man to put his teeth onto the street curb and Derek stomping on the back of his head.

However, Derek is required to face his beliefs when he heads off to prison. He learns very quickly that there is no place for his beliefs, and ironically befriends a black man when they are forced to share laundry duty together. When his old history teacher visits and tells him that Danny is headed down the same path, Derek vows to change his ways for good when he gets out and move himself and his brother far away from the mess that he has made.

At the welcome home party of his release, Derek asks his girlfriend to go away with him and Danny, she leaves upset and refusing. Derek is also forced to confront Cameron, the man responsible for Derek's former beliefs and tell him what he now knew to be the truth. The brothers leave and Danny is able to finish his paper, which is spoken as narration through the last bits of the film.

The story ends with Danny being shot to death by a black kid in the bathroom at school. Powerful acting from Edward Norton (Derek Vinyard) and Edward Furlong (Danny Vinyard) bring this story to the screen and give it the perfect acting that such an impressive movie requires. American History X might be hard to watch at times, but it is a grand reflection on how people could be so confident in what they believe to be right. - 39815
